The boxed copy of GTA 6 is a box with a download code in it. There is no disc at launch. Rockstar confirmed this, some retailers have decided not to stock it, and the follow-on questions have been arriving steadily ever since.

Two of those questions got answered this month.

The first is region locking. On July 27, Rockstar clarified that PS5 codes have to be redeemed on a PlayStation Network account registered in a supported region. Xbox Series X|S codes carry no such restriction. If you were planning to import a cheaper copy from another market, that plan works on Xbox and does not work on PlayStation.

The second is expiry, and this one got badly distorted in transit. Codes sold at retail in Japan must be redeemed within 170 days of the November 19 launch. That is a Japan-specific rule. The version that went viral — that every boxed code everywhere expires — is not true. Outside Japan, the time limits that exist apply to bonus content, not to the game itself.

A few other practical details worth having in one place. Preload opens on November 12, a week before launch, and the game unlocks on November 19. The standard edition is $79.99 and the Ultimate is $99.99; there is no Collector's Edition. GTA 6 will not be sold officially in Russia, China and several other markets.

There is still an open question about whether a real disc release follows later. A Polish outlet reported a December window, and that claim is sitting in our tracker as unverified. Take-Two has pushed back on it more than once, and when Strauss Zelnick was asked about a disc arriving in 2027 his answer was "that's not the plan." Read that how you like — it is not quite a denial, but it is not encouraging either.
